Remnants
2011/12
Fabric. Ashes. Ink. Beeswax. Light.
From these natural ingredients, I explore ideas about community, necessity, life and death.
Fragments. Remnants. Scars. Stories.
Rooted in contemplation about refugee life, I am considering the great significance that each life, each journey, each being’s search has. My work relates to fragility and struggles, and also seeks to address a sense of unity and togetherness that is often a part of these circumstances.
Many of the pieces in this body of work have a garment, figure-like presence and are often constructed piece by piece - much in the same way that a hurried tent in a refugee camp might be built of any fragments that could be spared. The stitching together of different pieces of fabric echoes the making of clothing, or shelter. Threads binding, holding, uniting. Pieces that were broken or incomplete on their own are made stronger, are perhaps made more whole through their relationship with the other pieces. They are a prayer.
I am very interested in the way that light affects this work. The pieces are changeable; it is by light that they have presence.
Salvaged. Striving. Longing. Light.
